so many write about this place using superlatives. and it is the best pizza we’ve had here. we found it hard to decide which one to get, the choice is huge. anyway, made by italians, appreciated by argentinians. thank goodness for immigration, right?

turns out it’s not easy to find certain foods here. natural yogurt for example is always a pain. if it’s without sugar, it won’t sell, so even the greek-style one has either bits of fruit (!) or sugar inside. when you discover that only type which isn’t sweetened, you stumble upon another curiosity on the list of ingredients: gelatin (stabilizer). clearly not a vegetarian option.

glad to know there’s la choza for sugar and gelatin free organic yogurt (products available at farmers’ markets and veggie restaurants). there’s wapi for as delicious as beautiful cheese (in most supermarkets). and hausbrot for naturally wonderful bread (branches across the city). yum!

Oh yes, it is a chain. But made in Argentina. But their coffee does taste good. And if you want to work on your computer all day, they do have sockets to accommodate this. And when you lose your phone, a staff member will bring it to you in a white envelope the next time you visit. So yes, we like havanna.

Havanna coffee shops, all over the place.

there was no plan to buy this beauty. but when i saw it at the organic market i couldn’t take my eyes off it. argentina is where pumpkin was born. argentina is where pumpkin should and is eaten.

so let’s start with this squash then. its skin looks amazing, right? right. now guess how long it took us, meaning Karol, two knives and i, to remove it. over forty minutes. we thought it would be our worst memory from the whole stay here. little did we know about bad memories at that time.

it was a humid evening, right before a storm, when i started cooking. the chopped kabuto, with some olive oil and spices safe in one pot. onions with butter slowly awaiting rice in another. because risotto needs time and attention, preparing it is a lesson in patience. you just stand there, add a ladle of stock or water and stir. you think it’s ready, taste it and need to add some more liquid and stir again. you’re focused no matter what, otherwise it burns. i did it all. it came out perfect. kabuto, on the other hand, had a very strong, earthy taste. i added tomatoes to make it sweeter but it overwhelmed them. anyhow, i’m sure we’ll meet again.

the food factory likes white. and this is most probably why i’m attracted to it. this, and the fact that they serve couscous. couscous, which i’ve been looking for every day since we arrived in buenos. yes, they serve it. just like that. with their fish of the day.

we go there and order. chicken for Karol, you know what for me. the waiter is a moaner. first he says there is no salad, then it takes him a while to suggest something instead (roasted potatoes – delicious, away from healthy), he also can’t get it why we like it here. apparently we’re nutters because we enjoy the weather and no, buenos is not a good place to learn spanish. it’s not that he’s rude, he just seems tired of his life and oh, the waiting mistakes he makes are endless. reminds me of the taxi driver from Have a Nice Day by Stereophonics. but here they play argentinean, mostly female, hip-hop. it goes with the space and the early evening light that makes it even more inviting.

our food arrives. bread with garlic and rosemary. served with salt. pepper and light white cheese. a strange combination yet we like it. i get salmon and what i’ve been pining for: couscous. whoa, wait a minute, what’s wrong with it? it seems to be cooked in vegetable stock but hey, not any fresh one but the nasty stuff you get packed in a small so-called cube. too salty and far too moist for my liking. i taste the fish and it’s also oversalted. two bits of grilled mango make hardly any difference to the overall taste, maybe they are what they look like: accidentally dropped pieces of fruit.
Karol’s vegetables look and taste good. he reports the chicken is nothing special but we both like the extra: roasted potatoes.

so are we coming back here? yes, but only for coffee. and couscous? the waiter told us we can easily get it in china town so i guess that’s where we’ll be heading next.
